When you need one next step
What to do when you're overwhelmed.
When you are overwhelmed, shrink the horizon rather than solve the problem. Settle your nervous system for two minutes first, then decide only the next small action. A system in freeze cannot plan at distance.
Your 2-minute fix
Two minutes of slow, paced breathing to bring the arousal down far enough that thinking becomes possible again.

What to do when you're overwhelmed
The order matters more than most advice admits. Almost every list of tips for overwhelm starts with organising, prioritising or planning, and all three require the exact capacity that overwhelm has temporarily taken from you. Asking a flooded system to rank its problems is asking it to do the hardest available task first.
Breathing first is not a nicer way to procrastinate. Slow, paced breathing is the shortest reliable route to lowering physiological arousal, and it needs nothing from you but the pattern. Once that is done, the same question you could not answer two minutes ago is often answerable: what is the one thing that would take the most weight off today?
This is one of five situations on the overwhelm triage picker. The two-minute fix here is breathing, which is free, needs no account, and stores nothing. If this is not quite your situation, the others are i can't start, work is too much, everything at once, and too much to do.
Common questions
What should I do first when I feel overwhelmed?
Settle your body before you try to organise anything. Two minutes of slow breathing costs almost nothing and restores enough capacity to think. Sorting, ranking and planning all need that capacity, so doing them first tends to fail.
What do I do when life feels like too much?
Shrink the horizon. Do not try to solve the year, the month or the week. Decide what the next hour holds and let the rest wait. If the feeling stays for weeks rather than days, treat it as a reason to see your doctor.
Why can't I think straight when I am overwhelmed?
Because the same system you would use to plan your way out is the one currently loaded past capacity. That is not a character failure, it is a bandwidth problem, and it lifts as arousal comes down.
This is a self-guided exercise for everyday overwhelm, not treatment. If the feeling has lasted for weeks, or comes with panic, hopelessness or thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a doctor or a crisis line rather than working through it alone.
