← All kinds of overwhelm

When the list is longer than the day

Too much to do.

Sometimes the list really is longer than the day. What you can change is the size of the unit you work in: shrink a task well below what feels sensible, so starting no longer requires believing you will finish.

Your 2-minute fix

One short block on one item. Not the list: the smallest piece of it that has a clear end.

Too much to do

It is worth naming honestly that this is sometimes a workload problem rather than a mindset problem. If the list has been longer than the day for months, no technique fixes that, and the real answer involves dropping things or asking for help. Tools like this one are for getting through today, not for making an impossible load sustainable.

For today, though, the move is to stop negotiating with the total. The total is not something you can act on. One item, for one bounded stretch, is. Do that, and the list is shorter by one, which is the only rate at which lists ever get shorter.

This is one of five situations on the overwhelm triage picker. The two-minute fix here is focus timer, which is free, needs no account, and stores nothing. If this is not quite your situation, the others are i can't start, work is too much, i don't know where to start, and everything at once.

Common questions

What do I do when I have too much to do?

Stop working from the total and start working from a single bounded block. Pick one item, give it a set stretch of time with a clear end, and let the rest wait. The total is not actionable; one item is.

How do I prioritise when everything feels urgent?

Ask which single item would take the most weight off if it were done today, and start there. Ranking a long list precisely is slow and costs capacity you do not currently have. One good-enough choice beats a perfect order.

What if I genuinely cannot get it all done?

Then some of it will not get done, and deciding which parts is better done deliberately than by running out of time. If the list has been unmanageable for months rather than this week, that is a workload conversation to have with whoever sets it.

This is a self-guided exercise for everyday overwhelm, not treatment. If the feeling has lasted for weeks, or comes with panic, hopelessness or thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a doctor or a crisis line rather than working through it alone.
