When the workload will not stop
Overwhelmed at work.
Being overwhelmed at work is usually a containment problem, not a time management one. The load is too big to hold in mind at once, so give your attention one bounded block instead of the whole pile.
Your 2-minute fix
One short, bounded block of work. Not the pile: one thing, for a set stretch, with a defined end.
Start one small blockFree, no account, nothing saved.
You are not behind. You are carrying a lot at once.

Overwhelmed at work
Trying to keep the whole workload in your head is the part that costs the most. Every open item takes up room, and the more items you hold, the less capacity is left for the one you are actually doing. That is why the day can go by in constant motion and still feel like nothing moved.
A bounded block does two things at once. It shrinks what you are responsible for right now down to something you can actually finish, and it gives the rest of the pile somewhere to wait that is not your working memory. When the block ends, you choose again. You are not committing to the whole thing, only to the next stretch.
This is one of five situations on the overwhelm triage picker. The two-minute fix here is focus timer, which is free, needs no account, and stores nothing. If this is not quite your situation, the others are i can't start, i don't know where to start, everything at once, and too much to do.
Common questions
What do I do when I am overwhelmed at work?
Stop trying to hold the whole workload at once. Pick one item, work on it for a bounded stretch with a clear end, and let everything else wait until that stretch is over. Containment beats prioritising when you are too loaded to think clearly.
How do I stop feeling overwhelmed by my workload?
Get the pile out of your head and into something external, with no sorting at first. Then shrink the unit of work well below what feels sensible. The relief usually comes from no longer carrying the list, not from the list getting shorter.
Should I tell my manager I am overwhelmed?
If the load has been beyond what is doable for a sustained stretch rather than a busy week, that is information your manager needs. Bring the specifics: what is on your plate, what is at risk, and what you would drop first. That is a workload conversation, not a confession.
This is a self-guided exercise for everyday overwhelm, not treatment. If the feeling has lasted for weeks, or comes with panic, hopelessness or thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a doctor or a crisis line rather than working through it alone.
