Grounding
Grounding is any technique that pulls your attention out of a spiral of thoughts and back into the present moment, usually through your senses. Your eyes, ears, and skin can only report what is happening right now, so deliberately attending to them interrupts a mind stuck in the past or the future.
What it looks like
Naming five things you can see. Pressing your feet into the floor and noticing the pressure. Holding something cold. The best-known version is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, which walks through all five senses one at a time, slowly.
The honest part
Grounding is a foothold, not a fix. It interrupts the moment; it does not erase what caused it. If you find yourself needing it constantly, that is worth talking to someone about.
