Feeling tired
What tired actually is
Tired is the system reporting spent resources, and it comes in more currencies than sleep: physical fatigue from exertion, mental fatigue from decisions and screens, emotional fatigue from feeling and managing feelings all day.
The kinds matter because the cures differ. Sleeping off emotional exhaustion works about as well as napping through a decision backlog: mildly, briefly, and beside the point.
How it tends to show up in the body
- Heavy eyelids and heavier limbs
- Rereading sentences that refuse to land
- Snappishness on a hair trigger
- Sighing as punctuation
- The 3pm wall, or the all-day wall
What it is usually telling you
Tiredness is an honest gauge with a diagnosis attached: body-tired asks for rest and food; mind-tired asks for fewer decisions and real breaks; feeling-tired asks for lighter emotional load and time that demands nothing of your face. Chronic tiredness that ignores sleep is usually one of the second two wearing the first one's coat.
How to name it so it loosens
- Ask which tank: body, mind, or feelings? The answer changes the prescription entirely.
- Honour it early: tiredness compounds, and everything degrades quietly, mood, patience, judgment, before anything visibly breaks.
- Protect the boring pillars: sleep window, food, daylight, movement. Dull, and they carry everything else.
Often confused with
Low. Tired lifts with genuine rest. Low persists through a good night's sleep because its cause was never energetic. The weekend test tells them apart.
Overwhelmed. Overwhelm is too many inputs at once; tiredness is too few resources left. Overwhelm needs sorting, tiredness needs refilling. They love arriving together.
Common questions
Why am I tired all the time even with enough sleep?
Sleep only refills the physical tank. Persistent tiredness despite decent sleep usually points to mental load (decisions, vigilance, screens) or emotional load (managing feelings, yours and others'), which drain separately and restore differently. Naming which tank is empty is half the fix. If deep fatigue persists regardless, a medical check is sensible.
What is emotional exhaustion?
The specific fatigue of feeling and managing feelings at volume: caring for others, masking at work, absorbing conflict, staying pleasant under strain. Its signature is being too tired for people while physically fine. It restores through genuinely undemanding time, not through sleep alone.
Why does rest sometimes not feel restful?
Because much modern rest is input, not restoration: scrolling and streaming still spend attention. Restorative rest matches the empty tank: bodies want stillness and sleep, minds want low-information time, feelings want company that requires no performance. Matching the rest to the tiredness is the trick.
